There’s a chill in the air. Leaves are changing, and pumpkins have appeared on every doorstep. It’s that time of year again. Fall!
Those of you who know me personally know I have a love/hate relationship with Fall. On the one hand, Fall means winter is coming, and where I live now, winter means COLD. I miss Florida “winter”!
But, I also love the first day when the air turns cool and just “feels” like Fall. On that day, nostalgia washes over me, and I remember all my childhood excitement about the birthday gifts to open, Book Fairs to shop, Halloweens to haunt, and holidays to celebrate with family. Fall just has a certain magical quality to it.
A few years ago, I discovered Susanna Hill’s Annual Halloweensie Contest, and since then, this fun little challenge has become another Fall tradition that I look forward to each year.
Here’s the challenge in a nutshell: Write a 100-word Halloween story for children using the words skeleton, creep, and mask. Then share your story!
So without further ado, here’s my 2020 Halloweensie entry shared with Y-O-U (and the world too!).
Where is Jed?
The skeletons were out to scare
And witches wandered everywhere.
Jed’s mask was waiting by the door,
His costume lay out on the floor.
But where was Jed? Mom didn’t know,
And it was nearly time to go.
She searched the house and called Jed’s name,
But no one answered; no one came.
The sound of steps. The doorbell rang,
And happy little monsters sang:
“It’s Halloween! Please give us sweets!
Some extra-special chocolate treats.”
Mom passed them out and closed the door
Before she heard a little snore.
There in the bed, she found her Jed,
Her not-so-creepy sleepyhead.
Your turn! Write your own Halloweensie! Then send me the link so I can read yours too.
This is so CUTE and so well written, I love it! Well done, Joy!
Thanks, Helen!

Aww, hopefully Jed woke up and got to go trick-or-treating. Those last lines are laugh out loud funny!
Thanks, Katie!
Such a sweet story, Joy! And impeccable meter! Best of luck in the contest.
