Susanna Hill is at it again! That’s right. It’s time for another contest! This time the challenge is to write a Valentine’s Day story for children in which someone is curious. Oh, and don’t forget! It needs to be 214 words or fewer. Do you or your students have what it takes?
The entry period runs from February 12 to 14 if you want to officially compete. But even if not, this is a great classroom activity. You could even use the prompt as a warm up on Friday. Just be sure to let me know if you do!
Now without further ado…Here’s my entry!
February 14
“Psst! Henry! Are you asleep?”
“Not yet. What’s up?”
“Mom and Dad put us to bed early.”
“Yeah, so?”
“And THEY didn’t go to bed early…”
“Yeah…?”
“So… they must be doing something FUN — without US!”
“You’re right! No FAIR!”
“Did you notice the chocolate on top of the refrigerator?”
“No. But did YOU see the flowers Dad brought home from work?”
“Oh yeah! And Mom was DEFINITELY holding the TV remote when I went to the bathroom…”“What do you think they’re doing?”
“I don’t know…Do you want to find out?”
“Let’s go!”
Sneak, sneak, sneak, CREEAAAK!
“SHHHH! They’ll hear you!”
“Sorry…”
“I bet they’re racing to see who can eat the most chocolate…”
Sneak, sneak, sneak, “eek!”
“SHHHH!!”
“There was a spider!”
“Maybe they’re sword fighting with flowers?”
Sneak, sneak, sneak, SQUEEEEEEAK!
“HENRY!”
“Oops…”
“I think I smell popcorn…”
“They’re probably watching our favorite movie!”
“Almost there…”
“Look, they’re…”
Sneak, sneak, sneak, peek…
“…KISSING!!!!”
“AAAGHHHH!!!”“EW! EW! EW! EWWWWW!!”
THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, BUMP!
“OUCH!”
“LET ME THROUGH!”
“STOP SHOVING!”
THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, JUMP!
“Quick! Pretend you’re sleeping!”
“SNOoOoOORE!”
tick-tock-tick-tock
“Do you think they’re coming?
tick-tock-tick-tock
“I think we’re safe.”
“Do you think they saw us?”
“I don’t think so…All I know is…I NEVER want to see THAT again!”
Your turn! Did you write a Valentiny? If you did, be sure to let me know!
P.S. Celebrate life (and love!)
I love it! This is so cute and I can picture it happening. Glad Mom and Dad weren’t doing anything beyond kissing! LOL! Good luck!
LOL, quite the funny story. Ew. Kissing. Perfect! Good luck!
Cute! I like your fun format and quick pacing.
HA! That will teach those sneaks!
So funny 🙂 Great visuals of the kids sneaking about and scurrying. Good luck!
Very cute! I remember the feeling of missing something at bedtime!
Hilarious! Love the build up, and super fun ending!
Ha ha ha! This sounds so real!! Great job.
Hahaha, Joy! You made me laugh! 🙂 Great job showing curiosity, believable kid behavior, and sibling relationship! I guess those little sneaks learned their lesson! 🙂 Thanks for joining in the Valentiny fun!
